KUWAIT CITY, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- Kuwait and the United Nations' office in the country on Sunday organized an online seminar on how to counter misinformation and promote social cohesion.

The two-day seminar, titled "Role of Media in Countering Misinformation to Promote Social Cohesion," was co-organized by the Kuwaiti Ministry of Information and UN Resident Coordinator's Office in Kuwait.

During the seminar, scholars and professionals from media discussed how to counter misinformation by highlighting the importance of the role of media in times of humanitarian crisis.

"The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed fault lines, fissures, and fragilities in societies and economies around the world. Misinformation, just like the pandemic, is a virus that is spreading and infecting our lives," said Tareq Al-Sheikh, the UN secretary general's representative and resident coordinator to Kuwait.

Accurate information saves lives, while misinformation prompts fear and bad decisions, the UN official added.

Faisal Al-Mutlaqqem, a senior official at the Kuwaiti Ministry of Information, echoed Al-Sheikh's words, saying that misinformation is not less dangerous than the COVID-19 and that's why Kuwait fights rumors and misleading information by giving facts to citizens. Enditem
