NAIROBI, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- The Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) on Wednesday invited 29 players for medical and physical assessment ahead of the upcoming sevens season.

"Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and following guidelines put in place by the government as well as World Rugby, we have started with Shujaa (Kenya 7s) who underwent their COVID-19 tests on 10 November 2020," the local governing body stated.

Among those called up are World 10s series champions Andrew Amonde (captain), Collins Injera, Willy Ambaka, Oscar Ouma and Oscar Dennis.

Impala Saracens duo of Sammy Oliech and Alvin Marube are joined by Menengai Oilers trio Harold Anduvate, Derrick Keyoga and Mark Kwemoi.

Blak Blad's Archadius Khwesa was also invited, as Kenya begins preparations for a season that will conclude with the Tokyo 2020 Olympics next summer.

Innocent Simiyu has since been appointed Kenya 7s coach after his unceremonious exit after 2018 Rugby World Cup Sevens.

The National Olympics Committee-Kenya announced plans in October to hold camp for all national teams that will travel for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics at Kenyatta University.

National coaches Simiyu of Kenya 7s, Benjamin Musa of Kenya Boxing, Camilyn Oyuoya of Kenya women's 7s and NOCK's Geoffrey Kimani inspected Kenyatta University's gymnasium as a possible venue for the teams' residential training.

The 2020/21 HSBC World Sevens Series is set to have fewer legs as the Dubai, Cape Town, Sydney and Hamilton legs have since been canceled due to the ongoing pandemic. Enditem
