Mobile breakfast canteens are now rolling on Shanghai’s streets. Food enterprises including Bright Food, Hema and Babi Food will soon launch their canteen trucks across the city.

Making its debut in Zhuanqiao, Minhang District, a bright tangerine colored Bright Food truck caught the eye of many nearby residents. The hygienic canteen truck and the wide variety of both nutritional and tasty food made people linger. Within less than half an hour, the service staff had received a long list of orders.

“The newly-built neighborhood is equipped with insufficient facilities. The breakfast canteen truck has solved residents’ problem, as commuters, especially young people, have less time to prepare breakfast at home,” said Ms. Zhang, a local resident.

Each truck offers around 500 servings a day, covering over 40 affordable breakfast choices, including dairy products, steamed buns, sandwiches, rice balls and sushi. The opening hours are from 6:00am to 10:00am.

“There will be replenishment in case of insufficient supply. We are also considering extending the opening hours in the morning, to meet consumers’ demands,” said Yu Xiao from Bright Food.

Apart from Bright Food, Hema, the company that took the initiative to launch breakfast pickup stores, has also begun to sell breakfasts from mobile trucks. The food people order on their mobile phones from the Hema app will be stored in an intelligent self-service locker until they come and pick it up, saving queuing time during the rush hour.

To have a better management of the mobile trucks and ensure efficient problem-solving, the authorities have made it clear that all vehicles will be integrated into the city’s unified online government management system. Each truck has an “ID card” which contains information like license plates, business owners, opening times, addresses and business areas.
