Strong winds, rain to hit city over weekend
From:Shanghai Daily  |  2021-07-23 09:29

TYPHOON In-Fa is expected to make landfall in Zhejiang Province over the weekend with strong winds and rainstorms likely to lash Shanghai.

The eye of Typhoon In-Fa was about 700 kilometers southeast of Wenling in Zhejiang at 11am yesterday, packing winds of up to 151.2 kilometers per hour. It is moving northwest at a speed of about 5-10 kilometers per hour, according to the National Meteorological Center.

The wind force in Shanghai increased yesterday due to In-Fa’s external circulation, triggering a blue gale alert — the lowest level in the four-color system — at 1pm.

Rain and strong winds are expected from tomorrow night until Monday, Shanghai’s meteorological bureau said. As much as 350 millimeters of rain is expected to hit the city.

The State Grid Shanghai Company has carried out precautionary tasks to prepare for the likely fallout from the storm. It carried out checks at all the substations, transmission lines and power supply facilities, and strengthened flood control measures at underground substations, low-lying substations and cable tunnels.

The company has kept on standby more than 743 recovery vehicles, 45 power-generating vehicles and nearly 5,000 pieces of flood-preventing materials for the typhoon.

There are 173 emergency power repair stations throughout the city, and more than 3,500 electricity workers are on 24-hour watch every day during typhoon season.

Meanwhile, the company reminded residents to pay close attention to electrical safety, make necessary inspections of home circuits and electrical devices, and stay away from dangerous power points and power supply facilities to avoid the risk of electric shock.

The Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau said 296 greenery emergency teams, 338 road cleaning teams, and 118 teams to handle unexpected situations resulting from falling signboards and outdoor advertisements, were geared to prevent flooding and deal with potential hazards.

Trees have also been tended ahead of the typhoon.

Some tourist attractions in the city will be closed from Saturday. Fengjing Ancient Town scenic area, Jinshan City Beach, Langxia Ecological Park, Jinshanzui Fishing Village and Donglin Temple scenic area will all remain closed.

The Shanghai Administration of Sports said that local sports bodies should cease organizing outdoor group activities and competitions. Stadiums and sports museums will be closed over the weekend.

The coastal Lingang area, at the intersection of Hangzhou Bay and the mouth of Yangtze River, has taken all measures to deal with possible flooding.

It has set up 16 temporary shelters which can accommodate 13,300 people.

It has also lowered the water level in Dishui Lake and cleared fallen leaves from drainage and manhole outlets.

As an emerging community, Lingang has 382 construction sites employing 26,951 workers. It has reinforced structures and dismantled some scaffoldings to keep away falling objects.
