Returning vehicles are expected to surge from Tuesday, with peak traffic expected on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons.

Congestion may occur on expressways such as G2 near Jiangqiao, G1503 near Gaodong, G15 near Zhuqiao, G40 near the Yangtze River Bridge, G50 near Xujing and G60 heading to Shanghai, said the city's transportation commission center.

Travelers are reminded to avoid peak periods and follow real-time traffic updates.

Shanghai has received fewer travelers during the first half of this year’s National Day holiday.

According to data, about 2.3 million residents went traveling between October 1 to 4, a quarter less than last year; while the number of people visiting Shanghai has shrunk nearly 30 percent over the same period. Rail travel is the most popular transport option among holidaymakers.

The number of vehicles on expressways has reached 5.3 million, slightly higher than last year.

A total of 27.5 million people in the city have used public transportation during the holiday thus far. Notably, ferry passengers to Chongming Island and across the Huangpu River have increased over 20 percent for last year.
