Control measures and vaccine key to defeat epidemic
From:Shine  |  2020-09-26 17:29

Dr Zhang Wenhong, head of Shanghai’s expert team for the treatment of coronavirus patients, said the public still should stay on alert for imported cases and prevent regional outbreaks.

Medical experts are expecting a global second round of the coronavirus but predict it will become like a seasonal flu.

Dr Zhang Wenhong, head of Shanghai’s expert team for the treatment of coronavirus patients, said the public still should stay on alert for imported cases and prevent regional outbreaks.

“If a case is reported in one place, it should be shut down immediately and strict measures conducted to keep the issue under control within one month,” he told the second Cross-Strait Forum on the Development of International and Premium Healthcare in China on Saturday.

Experts say viruses tend to lose their lethal attributes over time as they spread.

Governmental officials and health experts participated in the forum launched in Shanghai’s Huashan Hospital to discuss high-end and VIP medical services during the coronavirus epidemic.

“Proper infectious disease control measures and vaccines are key to ending the coronavirus epidemic in the world," Zhang said.

"We have seen very promising information on the development of vaccines and are waiting for the results of the clinical trials, which are expected to be released in late October and early November. Without a vaccine, the world can’t reopen. International cooperation is extremely important for the reopen.”

Dr Gu Jingwen, director of Huashan Hospital Worldwide Medical Center, the nation’s first joint-venture clinic, said the epidemic imposes many challenges and opportunities for VIP services, which not only means health care but also insurance, intelligent medicine and chronic disease management.

“High-end health care is developing quickly in Shanghai, whose foreign hospitalized patients remained at a yearly increase of 12.3 percent from 2016 and 2019," she said.

"We will discuss how to better restart services after the epidemic wanes in the world and introduce more medical tours with Chinese features."
