Photography's future on display in Yangpu

The 15th Shanghai International Photography Exhibition opened at the Maoma Warehouse in Yangpu District on Friday, the first day of this year’s Shanghai International Photography Festival.

The exhibition's theme is “Future Meets the Shanghai View" and aimsto show what photography brings to life and how it will develop in the future.

It will be open to the public from Saturday to October 7 and tickets can book free tickets on the "shwenlian"WeChat account.

“It is a sharing platform for the artists and the public,” Wang Hao, deputy head of Yangpu District, said atthe opening ceremony on Friday.

The biennial exhibition, organized by the Shanghai Federation of Literary and Art Circles and the Shanghai Photographers Association, began in 1986. It was China’s first large-scale international photography exhibition and now one of the most influential.

During this year’s event, activities will include academic seminars and lectures, a bazaar and cultural performance.

Over 400 artworks, including 10 videos andoutdoor installations, from 54 domestic and foreign artists are on display, selected from nearly 3,500 artworks from around 240 artists.

“It is incredible to organize such an exhibition during the novel coronavirus pandemic,” exhibition plannerAo Guoxing said. “We spent over three months on it, especially consulting with the foreign artists who could not come to Shanghai during the outbreak.”

Maleonn,48, brought his “Studio Mobile” photographs to the exhibition.

The Shanghai artistestablished a studiowith retro equipment with his team. They spent nearly a year taking photos of 1,600 people in 35 cities in China.

Ke Man aims to invite 1,000 visitors to paint little Bodhisattvas. “There are a thousand Bodhisattvas in a thousand people's eyes,”Ke said.

The fifth Shanghai Youth Photography Art Exhibition also opened at the same venue with images from20 photographers selected by organizers.

Ma Tiange, 28, from Sichuan Province, is showing how she prints her photographs on handmade paper.

“Photos on handmade paper can reduce the distance between artworks and visitors,” she said.
