New centers support educators outside of schools
From:Shine  |  2019-10-14 13:29

Twenty-five centers have been established around Shanghai to foster the work of teachers at government-supported educational organizations outside of school, including at youth activity centers.

According to the Shanghai Education Center for Science and Art, there are about 1,500 teachers at such organizations, which teach students in science and art, and also cultivate their creative talents.

These 25 new centers will offer training in 12 areas of science and technology education, and 13 areas of art education. These include engineering technology, robotics, STEM education, animation and singing.

The centers will also integrate resources and build up training and practice platforms to support both teachers at the beginning of their careers as well as experienced educators.

“Out-of-school educational organizations are an important part of our education system, and the quality and professional abilities of teachers are crucial,” said a teacher surnamed Hu from the youth activity center in Huangpu District.

“The establishment of these professional development centers means authorities have attached greater importance to out-of-school teachers, which gives us greater confidence. Such platforms also form schemes to ensure strengthened communication and study among teachers,” Hu explained.
