This year’s hottest sanfuperiod ended yesterday with only nine high-temperature days of 35 degrees Celsius and above recorded during the 40-day hot season, half of last summer’s number, meteorologists said.

Between 1981 and 2017, there were 17 high-temperature days a year on average in Shanghai. Last year, when sanfucame to an end, there had been 18 high-temperature days. In2017 there were 26 during sanfu.

But this sanfuwas not the coolest in city’s history as 1877 and 1882 had no high-temperature days. In contrast, the summer of 1935 witnessed a record 55.

Although the city has said goodbye to sanfuand will welcome the solar term chushu, or stopping the heat, tomorrow, autumn is stilla month away. Officially, autumn arrives when there arefive straight days with the daily average temperature below 22 degrees.

Shanghai generally enters autumn in late September or early October with October 2 the average. Over the past decade, summer has been getting longer and autumnshorter.

During the remainder of this week, the city will stay at the edge of the subtropical high pressure with more clouds, which are likely to drop some brief scattered showers or thundershowers.

Today’s high will remain at 33 degrees and temperatures will go down to 30 degrees Celsius at the weekend.
