Foreign journalists marvel at Shanghai’s history and modernization

A media group mainly consisting of foreign journalists visited symbolic sites in Shanghai on June 17, exploring Chinese history, high technology and modern development.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the CPC, and Chinese people’s devotion has been greatly inspired. According to Ruan Jun, deputy director of the Memorial for the Site of the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China, the newly opened hall witnessed the groundbreaking event of the founding of the Party and aims to express the CPC’s devotion to the rejuvenation of China and the happiness of the Chinese people. It has been a very popular historical and educational spot, embracing 13,000 Chinese and foreign visitors each day, all of whom come to visit spontaneously.

Impressed by the CPC’s determination and sacrifice for the well-being of the people, the group visiting the memorial took photos of various revolutionary materials and listened carefully to the Party history. Passing a wall in front of which a group of Party members were taking their admission oaths, many were attracted to take a video of this Chinese characteristic scene.

A two-hour’s bus journey took the journalists to Yangshan Deep Water Port, one of the main units of the Shanghai port in East China and the world’s largest automated cargo terminal. Built on the islands of Greater and Lesser Yangshan, the port is connected to the mainland through the world’s second-largest sea bridge - Donghai Bridge.

Greenness and innovation have always been the pursuit of the Shanghai port. Yang Zhiyong, vice president of Shanghai International Port Group Company (SIPG), told the journalists that the core technology of the port’s facility, namely the intelligent control systems for production and management, were like the "brain" and "nerves" of the port, and were developed by domestic companies. It has loaded and unloaded an average of 140,000 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) containers daily since 2021, and the busy scene has never stopped even during the worst time of the pandemic.

Yangshan Port also boasts a free trade zone. The establishment of the free trade zone has allowed for more increased maritime traffic and thus broadened its operations.

Taking an aerial view of a large stretch of containers and the vast sea in the distance, Yuan Zhongge, a reporter from the Korea Labor Daily, said that he was quite shocked to see the vast port. “I have been to Shuifu Port in Yunnan twice, and I didn’t realize that this port is even larger and more advanced than that one. It’s really amazing.”

Interested in China’s technological innovation, the journalists visited the industrial park of Siasun, a robot making company in Lingang of China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone, and interviewed the company’s president Yang Li for quite a long time. Mr. Yang showed the group various series of robots, including the cobot series, which all features independent intellectual property.

“We have more than 1,000 patents, some of which have not been made public. Huge knowledge reserves have been supporting our innovation. Our continuous iterative technologies are adopted into our products every year,” said Mr Yang.

According to him, last year, the company even sold products to Volkswagen, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz, including an order worth 100 million yuan from Italy. Compared to other suppliers in Europe, it can shorten the production period by one third with a much higher quality.

In the exhibition hall, the group was captivated by a human-machine interactive table tennis robot and took turns to experience automatic ball serving. “The Chinese National Table Tennis Women’s Team has adopted this facility for daily training, and the quick ball serving of this facility makes daily training more competitive,” explained Yang.

A full day’s trip in Shanghai’s Pudong district has widened the horizon of the foreign reporters whose offices are mostly based in Beijing, allowing them to see both the historical aspect of Shanghai as the origin place of the CPC and the modern technology and innovation of the present-day megacity.
