A video conference on the construction of Shanghai’s five new towns was held recently with Shanghai Mayor Gong Zheng guiding the work.

Gong emphasized that pushing the construction of five new towns, namely Jiading, Qingpu, Songjiang, Fengxian and Nanhui New Town, is an important measure to better serve the national strategy for the integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta, and a major strategic choice for Shanghai’s future.

Besides greening the environment with cleaner water and air, providing convenient transportation that connects to adjacent provinces and between the five towns, and creating efficient governance, 3 other points that should be focused on were put forward. For example, the construction of industrial bases and infrastructure should be coordinated. Major industrial projects will be mostly conducted in the five new towns. The new towns will speed up the development of modern service industries and even be built into benchmarks for advanced manufacturing. Featured functions of the new towns should be highlighted.
