By:Huang Qingyang, Zheng Qian  |  From:english.eastday.com  |  2020-08-24 09:40

The 2020 Shanghai Science and Technology Festival was opened on August 23 and will last to August 29. About 1800 popular science activities are going to take place to create a stronger scientific and cultural atmosphere in Shanghai.

Compared with previous events, this year’s festival, held amid the epidemic, has taken strict coronavirus prevention measures. Meanwhile, it shows great respect to anti-epidemic heroes, for example, inviting those who worked on the epidemic control front line and are devoted to making breakthroughs in COVID-19 research to walk the red carpet at the opening ceremony.

An online version of the festival activities will be available. People can see the live broadcast of important events and pay a visit to high-standard laboratories online. They are also able to watch the documentaries, movies, TED talks and cartoons related to science online during the entire festival.

Nearly 300 popular science bases will offer free or discounted tickets to the public during the festival, including the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum and Shanghai Insect Museum. More than 60 scientific innovation centers will organize both online and offline events. Some local communities will also provide more than100 DIY events for the residents. Meanwhile, the Shanghai Science Popularization competition and Shanghai Scientific Experiment Exhibition will also be held, in which more than 500 contestants will compete to become science popularization talent in Shanghai.

Moreover, a brand new TV show series will be broadcast to tell the stories of famous scientists in Shanghai like Zhang Wenhong, a leading expert in China's efforts to contain the coronavirus outbreak.

For teenagers, several parent-child technology carnivals will be organized for free at various locations like Shanghai Tower and the Shanghai Film Museum. People can book in advance for various kinds of scientific activities. There will also be lectures as well as stage performances to help kids better understand the impact that technological innovation brings to our lives.
