Since 2003, the number of entry-exit foreigners at Shanghai Pudong International Airport has always been the highest among all other national airports. To improve the city image, in May 2009, the Shanghai airport frontier inspection station established a youth volunteer service team to offer better service to foreign visitors based on their language skills. The number of team members has increased from 100 to more than 180 nowadays and they can provide communication service in nearly 12 languages. They have devoted their energy and language expertise to promoting our culture’simage to the world.

This team has participated in various events like Shanghai Expo, CIIE and G20 Summit in Hangzhou overeleven years. Their professional translation, warm-hearted communication and fine personal images have brought them huge compliments from staff members at different airline companies, foreign tourists and some international celebrities such as French actor Alain Delon.

Setting up such a volunteer service team is one of the important measures taken to ensure that CIIE takes place successfully every year. In the past two years, this team has provided translation servicesfor about 300 foreign delegations and more than 1000 exhibitors at CIIE. They have also offered thousands of foreign visitors services like consulting, recommending tourist attractions and airport travel guidance.“All of our team members are ready to make our contribution to CIIE this year at Pudong International Airport”, said Ma Xiang, the team leader.

In addition, to satisfyingthe new needs of international freight under special circumstances, the airport frontier inspection station has appointed 8 members from the volunteer service team to join the apron inspection team since February this year. With their help solving communication problems with international flights, the inspection speed has been greatly accelerated and the efficiency of cargo clearance has been largely improved as well.
