City lights up for volunteers

In a megacity such as Shanghai, what are the reasons behind its smooth running? Volunteers play a crucial part. To celebrate International Volunteer Day on December 5, Shanghai lit up for the four million volunteers in the city.

On the evening of December 4, a celebratory event was held in Shanghai Tower, the city’s tallest building. Nearly 200 charity representatives attended and witnessed the lighting ceremony.

On the double-skin facade of the Shanghai Tower, citizens could see the slogan: “Be a volunteer and promote the city’s voluntary services”.

At the celebratory event, a public services organization named “Green Housewife” shared its experience. It has successfully transformed a residential neighborhood littered with garbage and with a horrible living environment in Xuhui District into a lively and friendly “garden”. Over the past decade, residents joined “Green Housewife” and volunteered to collect plastic waste. Now the number of volunteers has risen to over 1,700. Each month, more than 300kg of plastic waste is collected for recycling.

According to statistics, by December 31, 2018, more than 4 million residents in Shanghai have registered with the Shanghai Municipal Volunteer Association on the “Shanghai Volunteer” website (http://www.volunteer.sh.cn). As of the end of October this year, the city has 206 licensed voluntary service organizations, 5,377 Shanghai Public Welfare Bases, and 12,560 volunteer service posts. Nearly 300,000 volunteers who were granted charitable services passports have offered more than 200,000 hours of public service in total.
