West Bund Museum Open to Public

The West Bund Museum held its opening ceremony, during which the Director of the city’s Culture and Tourism Bureau, Yu Xiufen, and Committee Secretary of Xuhui District, Bao Bingzhang, unveiled the nameplate of the West Bund Museum. It will officially open its doors to the public on the 8th of November, 2019.


Meanwhile, as a high level of cultural exchange between China and France, and the President of the Republic of France, Mr. Emmanuel Macron, and his wife, Mrs. Brigitte Macron, attended the opening activities. During these President Macron, together with the Mayor of Xuhui District, the Director of the Shanghai Xuhui Waterfront Area, Comprehensive Development and Construction Management Committee Mr. Fang Shizhong unveiled the nameplate of “Centre Pompidou x West Bund Museum Project”.

 

Situated in the Shanghai Xuhui Waterfront Area, the West Bund Museum was designed by renowned British architect David Chipperfield and his team. The museum is a 25,000m2 artwork which took three years to construct. The opening season will feature two exhibitions, presenting works from hundreds of the world’s top artists covering different topics and genres. Since the open day, a two-week opening season program has been presenting dozens of public art events including screenings, performances, forums, workshops and children’s activities.

 

The West Bund Museum’s Director, Mr. Li Zhonghui, suggested that, committed to commonality and internationalism, and based on Xuhui District’s historical and cultural heritage and the West Bund’s development of art and culture in recent years, the West Bund Museum seeks to break away from traditional patterns and conventional boundaries of art museums, and invites diverse audiences to participate in the cultural experiences of modern and contemporary art. By exploring innovative models of this public cultural institution’s operations, the museum expects to bring international art and culture products close to the Chinese audience.
