By:Zheng Qian  |  From:english.eastday.com  |  2019-08-14 18:02

Situated at the northeastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, Gannan Tibetan autonomous prefecture in southwest Gansu province has one of the best natural pastures in Asia. With Gannan as its core, the Amdo Tibetan area is also a place where yaks, an exceedingly precious animal, are mostly distributed, and yak milk, which contains more Cholesterol, Vitamin and Mineral content than common milk, is the main income source for the local nomads.

Danzeng Jiamucuo is from Qulu County in Gannan, and the yak industrialization over the past years has enabled him to change from an impoverished nomad to a well-off farmer with a cozy house to live in and a car to drive. On August 6, he introduced the changes to his life when attending a promotional activity of the 2019 Yak Milk Industry Development Forum held in Hezuo, the capital of Gannan.

Thanks to a series of yak processing companies, which purchase yak milk and ghee residue from the nomads to manufacture high value-added products, herders enjoy a more affluent life with the money they receive and the previous poverty-stricken Tibetan area is gradually being lifted out of poverty.

“In Gannan, we have seen what you are doing in protecting the environment and making enormous achievements in getting out of poverty,” said Ante Simonic, former Deputy Prime Minister of Croatia and President of the Croatia-China Friendship Association, when attending the forum. He also added that with strong consumption power and advanced technology, Europe could provide good opportunities for Gannan to go global.

Jointly organized by the Gansu goverment, the Northwest University for Nationalities and the Gansu Daily, the 2019 Yak Milk Industry Development Forum is part of further efforts taken by the Gansu government to deepen the development of the yak milk industry, build Gannan into the “capital” of yak milk in China and fight against poverty.
