In late autumn, as Wuhan, Hubei province, is hosting more migratory birds, bird-watchers in the city are recording their types and numbers.

"In recent years, the annual number of wild bird species observed and new species discovered keep growing," said Yan Jun, president of the Wuhan Bird Watching Society. "In this city, with a population of more than 10 million, 447 species of wild birds live in harmony with humans."

With its continuous efforts on wetland conservation and restoration, Wuhan is attracting more and more birds, Yan said.

At Tianxingzhou, an island in the Yangtze River, black storks — national first-class protected animals — have been recorded every year since 2014, and the numbers continue to increase.

"Last year, we recorded 38 black storks," Yan said, adding that volunteers clean the beaches every year before winter in order to provide a better environment for the birds to stay over.
